FISH MARKET + MONTECRISTI + TAGUA WORKSHOP + CHOCOLATE TASTING
Depart the pier for an introductory tour of Manta. Our first stop is the iconic fish market, where we learn about the daily activities of the fishermen and see you the variety of fish found in the Pacific.
After your visit you continue by coach to Montecristi, the town renowned for the making of the genuine Panama hat which despite the name, has its origin in Ecuador. In 1898, during the Spanish-American War, the U.S. government bought from merchants in Panama some 50,000 of these now-iconic hats for the troops. Given the location of the hats’ purchase, along with the hat’s popularity among the crews working on the Panama Canal in the early 20th century, it is no wonder the Ecuadorian sombrero became known as the Panama hat. On arrival in Montecristi, experience the quaint town, founded in 1628 as you stroll along the narrow streets and visit the main square, home to an impressive statue of a former Ecuadorian president born in Montecristi. See the picturesque wooden building that once served as the first girls’ school in Ecuador with its old walls and wonderful, well-worn wooden floors, this rustic building now houses a cornucopia of artisan stalls, selling everything from jewellery to colourful handcrafts to the famed Panama hat.
And finally there's nothing sweeter than having a chocolate tasting.
